About tax planning

Tax preparation records what already happened. Tax planning is the work that happens before the year closes, while you can still change the outcome.

We look at your entity structure, the timing of income and large purchases, owner compensation, retirement contributions, and the deductions and credits that fit your situation. Then we run projections so you know what you owe before the deadline instead of after it.

Planning is most valuable when your year is changing. If you are adding employees, buying equipment, opening a second location, selling an asset, changing entity type, or coming off an unusually strong or lean year, those decisions have a tax cost that is much easier to manage in advance than to explain in April.

What tax planning with Crunch includes

  • Entity structure review, including whether an S-corporation election still makes sense
  • Income and expense timing across tax years
  • Quarterly tax projections and estimated-payment scheduling
  • Owner compensation and reasonable-salary review
  • Retirement plan and benefit strategies
  • Depreciation and equipment purchase timing
  • Deduction and credit review based on current IRS rules
  • Multi-state and nexus considerations where they apply
  • A written summary of recommendations you can act on

Planning is available as a monthly add-on to any Crunch package or as a standalone engagement. See Pricing for current rates, or contact us and we will tell you whether planning is likely to pay for itself in your situation.

To get started, contact our team and we’ll send the secure intake worksheet for your situation, along with a short list of the documents we need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tax Planning

What is the difference between tax planning and tax preparation?

Tax preparation reports activity that has already occurred. Tax planning evaluates decisions before deadlines or year-end, while there may still be time to change the outcome.

Can tax planning include an entity review?

Yes. When relevant, planning can include reviewing the entity structure and whether an election such as S-corporation taxation continues to fit the business’s facts and goals.

Can you help with quarterly estimated taxes?

Yes. Tax planning can include projections and estimated-payment scheduling based on the information available at the time.

When is tax planning most useful?

Planning is especially useful before a major purchase, hiring change, ownership change, unusually strong or lean year, expansion, asset sale, or entity change.

Is tax planning available nationwide?

Yes. Virtual tax-planning engagements are available nationwide, subject to the facts and filing requirements involved.
